the dim lights.

“Jonathan,” Julian said, his voice trembling slightly. “We have a problem. The board just received an anonymous broadcast email. It contains full financial audits of the firm from the last three years… along with a copy of a trust fund opened four years ago under the names ‘Leo Miller’ and ‘Maya Miller.’

The air in the room seemed to vanish completely.

I stepped forward, my voice dropping an octave. “What did you just say?”

Julian swallowed hard, looking terrified. “Someone set up a multi-million-dollar offshore trust fund four years ago in the names of your twins, Emma. And according to the documents leaked to the board ten minutes ago… the primary trustee who has been secretly depositing funds into that account every month isn’t Jonathan.”

Jonathan turned on Julian, his eyes wide with fury and utter confusion. “What are you talking about?! Who set up a trust for my children?!”

Julian looked at Senator Collins, then back at me, his hand shaking as he turned the tablet around to show us the screen.

“The trust,” Julian whispered, “was established by your late father, Jonathan… three months before he died. And the co-signatory who activated it last month… was you, Emma.”

I stared at the glowing screen of the tablet, my head spinning. “That’s impossible. I’ve never seen those documents in my life. I’ve never taken a cent from the Miller family!”

Senator Collins stepped closer, his eyes narrowing as he read the digital file. A subtle, dangerous smile touched the corners of his lips.

“It seems,” Senator Collins murmured, looking up at all of us, “that the secrets in this room go far deeper than a failed marriage. Someone has been playing a very long game, Ms. Vance… and you were brought here today not to be humiliated, but to execute the final clause of a contract signed five years ago.”

My heart hammered against my ribs as I looked at my two children, who were looking back at me with innocent, wide eyes, entirely unaware of the storm gathering around them.

Jonathan looked at me, completely shattered, his voice barely a whisper. “Emma… what did you do?”

“I didn’t do anything,” I whispered, holding my children tightly against my side as the truth began to unravel around us. “I don’t even know who wrote that note…”

Senator Collins folded his hands over his cane, his eyes locking onto mine with chilling intensity.

“I do,” the Senator said softly. “Because the handwriting on that note… belongs to my wife. Who passed away ten years ago.”
